Transatlantic Venture Management

Bampton Group, headquartered in the San Francisco Bay Area with offices in the UK, is a transatlantic venture management and advisory firm focused on the global expansion of technology businesses. The firm operates through two subsidiaries, Bampton Ventures and Bampton Corporation.

Since 1994, with clients ranging across enterprise software, telecom devices and cellular products, Bampton Corporation has provided strategic advisory and interim management services to European technology companies looking to enter the US market, evaluated US opportunities or potential for their products or services, and for US technology companies seeking to explore or enter the European market. These services include initial market analysis and evaluation, the development of business and financing plans, and assistance in executing these plans ranging from establishing offices and key initial hires to providing interim executive and sales management for the first twelve to eighteen months of operation. These are fee-based services billed against a retainer from the client and usually include performance-based warrants for longer client engagements.

The advisory practice is chaired by Jeremy Woan, managing partner of Bampton Ventures, with Michael Bernard as CEO. Michael has over twenty-five years experience developing and leading US and international sales and business development operations for both US and non-US companies. He was a co-founder of Touchbase Systems, which he merged with US Robotics ahead of that company’s IPO and has been board member and senior manager of a wide range of privately held and publicly traded technology businesses.

Bampton Ventures seeks to invest in commercially proven, post revenue European technology businesses requiring expansion capital and expertise to enter the US market, or commercially proven US technology businesses seeking to enter Europe because it represents a larger market opportunity for them. All businesses in which Bampton has previously invested have subsequently gone on to successful IPO or trade sale.

Bampton Ventures is currently raising a new Transatlantic Technology Migration Fund and seeking portfolio investments for it. Bampton typically invests $3,000,000 to $8,000,000 over three rounds. It expects to be very actively involved in helping its portfolio companies develop and execute successful transatlantic expansion strategies, and to achieve liquidity for the investors within 3 to 5 years.

Jeremy Woan is Managing Partner of Bampton Ventures. He has spent the past decade primarily based in Silicon Valley working with, managing and investing in technology businesses seeking to expand transatlantically. Prior to this, as a CEO, he successfully built two technology companies to IPO, each based around a transatlantic business model. Previously, he spent 8 years working with several leading international investment banks as a technology analyst. The Bampton Ventures team also includes Piers Cooper (General Partner, formerly a general partner in MC3 Ventures, prior to that one of the senior managers of the Oracle venture fund and previously Vice President of Worldwide Business Development and Emerging Markets for Oracle Corporation), Steffen Schubert (Venture Partner, formerly CEO of the Dubai International Financial Exchange and previously CEO of EASDAQ), David Main (Venture Partner, currently Chief Executive of the Civil Service Benevolent Fund [CSBF], the UK’s largest occupational benevolent fund providing support to more than one million current or former UK civil servants) and Don Oliver (Finance Partner, a principal since 1985 in Morgan Fraser, a San Francisco based financial management firm).
